happy new year!

Well it’s a new year and we had a quiet night in, as usual. I enjoyed some diet cokes (ohhhh yeah, really living it up here) and it was business as usual with my littlest miss to care for. It was nice to see some of my facebook buddies were doing exactly the same (hello all you lovely ladies who were watching the brady bunch movie too after midnight!).
And isn’t this one happy and healthy baby? She wakes up from a nap to smile and gurgle at me and you couldn’t ask for a more content little baby. Oh and she’s growing, nice little chubby rolls all over. I do love that I make chubby little babies.

love her chubbiness

And somehow yesterday, I did manage to grab some time for a spot of quilting on this little quilt for Finnie. One pack of charm squares makes this quilt and it’s the perfect size for my twinnies. You’ll notice I have a soft spot for making charm square quilts but am determined to start cutting a larger quilt this afternoon….with a……….wait for it……….jelly roll and charm square pack!

I found some simple Moda fabric from a range called Blush that I had picked up from the wholesaler’s clearance section and I love that it complimented the Sherbet Pips range nicely.

the back quilted
Now for binding I cheated. I normally sew one side on, fold over and hand stitch to the back but I’ve decided that machine stitching it on is the way to go if I want to finish quilts this year. I still sewed on one side, then I overlocked the edges all around which makes it nice and neat, folded the binding over and stitched it on using my machine. I’m definitely a beginner at this technique and this is my second attempt but I figure if I practice then I can save a lot of time finishing my quilts and be on to the next project faster!

finn enjoys his new quilt

And Finnie is just happy to have a quilt to snuggle under that isn’t all pink….ok well there is just a hint of pink but he’s happy!

  1. Yes baby need little chubby buts, she is very cute…
Corrie if you stitch the binding on the wrong side by machine and bring it forward to the front machine stitch it down using a elongated zigzag and just catch the binding as the needle swings to the right, it works a treat and looks almost like being stitched down by hand. Love the little quilt.

    Happy New Year
    Christine

  2. Oh my goodness Elodie is just and adorable bundle of divine squishiness! I make slim babies (or maybe I’m just a bad dairy cow!) so I get quite envious at times of those chubby little rolls I see on other bubs ;-P
Your little quilt is gorgeous. I am determined to make a quilt soon – I just need to pluck up the courage! Maybe a simple charm square quilt where I buy the squares pre-cut is the way to go… I really want to make a cot quilt for young Luca. We were given a lovely one for Marcus by a friend’s mother who made it herself but Luca doesn’t have one.
    Happy New Year!

  3. A friend of mine used the blanket stitch on top for the finished edge and it looks great?? Cute little piece.. Baby is adorable,,
    Hugs,

  12. I love the look of the Sherbet Pips range and am looking forward to getting some of it when it is released. I like the idea of machine sewing the binding because it is a slow process by hand. Red Pepper Quilts has a tutorial on sewing on binding by machine I believe. One day I’ll finish a quilt enough to need those instructions.
I’m impressed you’re finding the time to sew at this time of year.

  13. Happy New Year, Retromummy! Elodie is one sweet soul, she sleeps so well! I would have loved a sleeper…it just wasn’t to be. I hope your new year is just as productive and creative as you want it to be. Cheers!

  14. Awwwww she is just ADORABLE…I bet she smells just as cute! I know that sounds kind of freaky, but most babies have that cute smell about them (until they fill their nappies, then it’s not so cute!) and she looks like she’d smell as cute as she looks…ok, the heat here in Sth Aussie must be getting to me, I’m rambling more than usual so I’ll go now. Hugs Naomi

  15. Thanks for inpsiring me again, Corrie!
Elodie is squishy and divine, go on, have #5, we are expecting ours in May!
In the mean time I look forward to receiving my Sherbert Pips from you so that I can do pretty much what you have done with yours! Looks great!
    Happy New Year!

  16. Happy new year, Corrie!
Love the chubby bub and the gorgeous quilt.
How many charm square packs would I need for a king single or single bed quilt? I am tempted……

  17. love the quilt – did you see the one I made with charm squares from you? It’s in my final post of 2010. Charm square quilts are great! I machine sewed my binding on but it’s not as pretty as I’d like.

  28. That is a seriously cute baby…and yes, babies must be chubby…they’re so small, you must have something to hold!

I laughed when I read about the Brady Bunch movie…I watched that while I finished knitting a cardigan…I love the teachers reaction to Davy Jones!

    Happy New Year!!!
