lokshen kugel

I can honestly say, hand on heart, I had never heard of Lokshen Kugel until I bought this book. If you’re like me then it is a traditional jewish dish that is best described as bread and butter pudding with noodles. This is definitely one for the family and little people. In fact my twinnies had 3 slices…………EACH. I was a little nervous as I had absolutely no idea what it was supposed to look like and so for your benefit am sharing the before and after pics.

I think I had too much pasta in mine so next time will try less pasta and more fruit just to tweak it but I’ll definitely make it again because it’s such a good dish for large families and big eaters.

the kids loved it
And I don’t need to tell you that men don’t make the best listeners. So when I gave retro daddy a slice I said, ‘it’s like bread and butter pudding but made with pasta’. And he tasted it while I was doing dishes and I came to see how he liked it and he said ‘it tastes like bread and butter pudding with pasta’.I say ‘Yes honey, that’s just what I told you!’ to which he replied ‘Oh’

And of course you need a photo of a slice for morning tea on a freezing cold day as you sit next to the fire writing your blog posts. And because it is such a popular jewish dish there are loads of recipes on the net. Mine came from my new BFF this book but you can find recipes here, here and here. And now I’m off to go and make some PW oat cookies for snackies.

  1. Oh wow, never heard of it either, but looks delicious & filling!! Brrr, enjoy the cold snap chowing down on the leftovers by the fire, love Posie

  2. Looks so yum! I have heard of it but never made it. Reminds me of the versatility of rice with sweet or savoury.

  3. Yummo :) I love pasta and reminds me of my father’s dish of pasta with ground walnuts mixed with sugar. A good hungarian dish! Must try this one when I’ve gone shopping for some of the ingredients.

  4. Now you are making me want to make a batch. Might just wait until my mom visits in July and get her to make it!

  5. Oh my! I can imagine having 3 slices of that. Carbs plus sugar plus dairy? I’m there with bells on!! x

  6. We’ll make a yiddishe mama of you yet!!
    xx

  7. It looks really yummy Corrie.
I love that little snippet of dialogue between you and Retro Daddy. Good to see I’m not the only one who talks to myself at times… though I am guilty of not listening at times also ;o)

  9. sometimes in my family here in the US we sprinkle a layer of corn flakes over the top and its yummy

  10. I have some still sitting in my fridge from Rosh Hashana. I don’t know how I’m resisting it and I won’t much longer. I can always make another. Shana Tova to you and yours.
