picnic fairgrounds

Well I’ve been sleeping a little easier lately. Why? Not because my children are sleeping through the night. Apparently I sleep through everyone waking up and don’t even hear retro daddy telling me that someone is awake. And I thought only he had selective hearing.

No it’s not that. I now have a metre of each the australian prints of Denyse Schmidt’s Picnic Fairgrounds range. Firstly I bought a little fat quarter pack which I thought would keep me happy. Then I realised how much I loved it and what beautiful quilts I could make so I went and bought a one yard pack of the US prints.

then I heard they were coming to australia and there were 10 unique prints to australia so I decided I had to have them. I can’t tell you the joy that comes from buying Denyse Schmidt at my local Spotlight. And how nice were the ladies there who rang me to let me know the fabric had arrived and that it would be put out the next morning. Nice.

And that is why I can sleep at night. I have the entire range here and when I’m ready I’m going to cut into it and make something lovely.

How clean is your shower?

Sponsored by Nuffnang &Viva

Ahhhhh, cleaning. One of the many home duties I am supposed to be on top of. But anyone with children at home knows how busy they keep you. Or how many distractions you can find before you get to the cleaning. And if you’d asked me a few weeks ago how clean my shower was? Well I would have told you it was lovely as I have a cleaning lady, thank you very much. But she is gone and I am the cleaning lady. Mind you, retro daddy tends to do the shower and gets right in there with the bleach, super strong cleaners and elbow grease. He’s good like that. When you remind him.

And apparently we spend an average of 8 hours every year cleaning the shower screen. Yawn. Imagine that time spent doing craft, reading a magazine, shopping. Other interesting findings from a survey of 1000 people included the preference of cleaning the toilet rather than the shower (really?), feeling the need to clean the shower while you are in it (been there) and half those surveyed use the time in the shower to escape other things – ummmmm small children, husbands, the only place you can get some peace and quiet and wash your hair. I also loved this gem – 43% of people felt guilty that their shower screen was dirty and that they were bad at housekeeping. People! You need more children. Trust me you won’t feel bad at housekeeping with 4 children under 5. They are your excuse. For everything.

Anyway, being the busy mummy that I am I received some Viva Shower Fast Wipes to try – but part of the deal is showing you my shower. Before. So I can show you the before and after. Yikes, now that is getting a bit personal. People might judge me. I even had second thoughts on whether I wanted to show you my shower. Could I google dirty showers? ;Soap scum build up shower screen?’ But lucky for me I have 3 bathrooms which each have a shower so I had a bit of choice in the matter. But then I faced a small moral dilemma – do I show you the shower screen in the bathroom we never use which is nice and clean. Do I show you the kid’s bathroom where no one ever has a shower but is kind of middle of the road.

Or do I show you our bathroom, where plenty of long showers are taken by one mummy? But what I didn’t realise was that the hardest part of showing you my shower screen is not which shower screen but how to get a good photo of it. I really struggled and after about 20 photos I got this one below. And I can’t believe I’m showing it to you all.

Nice big smear of my shampoo or conditioner on there. And come back later for the glamour shower shot where I show you one perfectly clean shower screen after I used the Viva Shower Fast Wipes. And I have to tell you, they really worked! And were too easy!

  1. Too Funny! I have just taken delivery of my on line grocery order and after numerous attempts to clean our grungy shower had bought a pack of these to try. They are sitting on the bench winking at me until the little one goes down for a nap and the sick big one goes to her room for quiet time :)

  2. One of ther reasons most of us blog/read blogs is to let ourselves and others know what normal. So your screen does not look bad at all. at all. I used to be a cleaner and discovered that pervectly clean shower screens used by perfectly clean people would getr dirty quite fast. The only to not have any build up is to wipe the screen as soon as it is used or at least once a day depending on how many use it. I’ve never tried these wipes but I do know that some shower cleaners that are beautifully effective are also bad particularily for womens health so it is alweays better if the man of the house does the cleaning. That’s my thought and I’m sticking by it. Only trouble is there is no man in my house! Cherrie

  3. I agree with Cherrie your shower screen does not look bad at all. Another way to keep your shower screen cleaner is to use body wash/shower gel, if you use cake soap you get a build up on the glass, but nothing beats wiping it down once a day (but I would rather be sewing so I don’t).

I’ve used the Viva Shower wipes and they were quite effective on the smooth surfaces but not so effective on the grout. My ideal shower would have no shower screen at all :)

  4. Oh yes, my shower screen gets smeary, but my 4 tend to use my shower when they wash their hair (so they can use my products) & no, they don’t clean or rinse it afterwards. My husband will scrub the shower screen, but he’s only here a few weeks of the year, bugger. I’ll have to give these a whirl as he’s about to go away for 9 months straight, that’s a long time between shower scrubs. Better yet, shall train the first born, she gets all the good ‘firsts’. Love Posie

  5. The bathroom behind the shower screen looks nice and tidy and your shower screen looks fine too! I worry about the waste with products like use once wipes, seems like a bit of an environmental nightmare? On another note, I love the cardi you made for your smallest cherub recently, very nice x

  6. I bought the shower wipes a few weeks ago – they work quite well. It gets easier each time I use them. I do find that I have to use more than one wipe tho.
