real estate talk

Well I should be packing up things for another day trip to Bowral tomorrow but instead I’m enjoying coffee and an early easter chocolate bunny. But I am becoming quite the expert at researching property and areas online since I can’t just jump in the car to go and check out an address 2 hours from here. So here is what I’m learning……….the same terms that real estate agents use up here in Sydney are the same everywhere.
Whisper quiet really means you’d never know you are on the main road with cars whizzing by. Gently elevated means an almost perpendicular driveway but it’s lovely when you get up/down to the house. Low maintenance block means small as does cosy. And there is always that old chestnut – renovaters delight -well you all know what that means. Oh and wait – address on request means we’re not going to give it to you because it’s on the main road/up a steep hill/right behind the high school/2 blocks from the brickworks/opposite the old cemetery and I say this from experience. And here’s another one – POA or price on application – means it is so out of your price range that it’s on a need to know basis…..and you don’t need to know!

And this house is just one of the absolutely stunning, droolworthy estates that come up when I research the Southern Highlands. Sadly it’s ruled out as it’s so way out of budget I’d need to win the lottery in a big way but you just have to look and say W.O.W. Now that is what I call an estate!

And this lovely property is called ‘Hopewood’ and just in case you are sitting on………..oh I don’t know, $9m then here you go and be sure to have me over for afternoon tea, won’t you!

  1. i want to go to there. and only 9 mil? At that price I hope it has room for my entire extended family!

  2. Stunning! I’m so glad you shared these photos. :)

  3. Hi Corrie
Have you thought about renting down there for 6mths or so just to get a real feel of the area before you sell up? Have an aunt who lived in Moss Vale for a few years and hated it, came back to Sydney. Also, a friend was thinking of moving there last year, sold her house and all and then chickened out but said she is really glad they didn’t move. The M5 can be a real nightmare.

Sorry, don’t mean to put a dampener on things, just telling you to really do your research.

Must go to bed now as it’s nearly 1am!!

  4. What a gorgeous place. I wouldn’t mind settling down there…and sending the bill to someone else!

Have a relaxing and reflective Easter. x

  5. amazing!happy Easter for you and you marvellous family dear retromummy!!
hugs from Spain(just at the corner…lol..)

  6. Oh what a fabulous fantastic dream of a property. Quite lovely x

  7. Hey i was just gonna call my realtor to make an offer on Hopewood! I’m hoping $8.99mil could seal the deal 😛 When do you want to come for tea?

  8. Good luck with the house search I know it’s really hard. That’s why we extended ours rather than move!

  9. You looking for a tree change or a weekend getaway?
    xx

  10. Oh that kitchen!!! We used to have a lot of day trips to Bowral, it is such a beautiful area. My daughter learnt to ride in Sutton Forest. Oh I think I need to plan a trip back up that way, looks like it has lost none of its charm .

  11. Oh Corrie, u sound like me , Im on the Sunshine Coast and would love to move ”out ‘ a little to acreage / rural, only 20 mins to 30 away from here, I was even googling the 2 mil properties last night lol…. I figure plant the seed with hubby and it will grow , he reckons in a few years we will and i can have my big (decent) kitchen but Im not likely to get one like the 9 mil still Im dreaming and plotting and scheming at the same time ….

  12. i’ll get my driver to drop off the money this morning and you can make the payment today….is there room for a sewing studio? Keep looking it will happen if it will be it will be. Enjoy

  13. good thing I’ve got that spare $9m stashed under the bed LOL

  14. You would need a lot of “hope” to purchase a property like that!
We’re doing “the search” at the moment too – real estate agents are quite an amusing bunch aren’t they?

  15. Corrie! My Dad grew up in the Hopewood House!! Back then it was a home for children who were given up by their parents. He was one of 85 children who grew up there. It’s such a beautiful place :)

  16. I think I saw this property featured in an issue of Country Style, well its garden and head gardener were at least!

  17. POA if you have to ask you can’t afford!! It doesn’t matter where you live in the world estate agent speak is the same. I have to say the internet is brill for househunting especially if you don’t currently live in that area or even country.I look at the details and then if I’m interested look at it on google earth, a brilliant way to spot the cemetry next door or steel works at the bottom of the garden.
Happy house hunting Corrie oh and happy easter!
    Pene x

  18. With POA if you have to ask the price, you can’t afford it.

  19. Well you have good taste, you can’t doubt that.
Moss Vale is NOT as nice as Bowral or the areas you’re looking at.
Keep coming south, we can live in a compound together & share our children on huge properties with cash left over to build proper homesteads big enough for our families!! We’ll never find the right country home, we’re building – it will look like $9M only with a different address to you & Nicole Kidman. Love Posie
