knitting for the soul

I know I’m probably preaching to the converted here, but knitting and craft in general can be so good for the soul. I decided to take a new knitting book, Retro Babes by Patons, to the hospital last Sunday with a ball of wool and some needles.

my favourite

It helped to pass the time when we had to step out or while I was sitting on the other side of the room or when I was there late at night. And the more I knit the calmer I became and the more I thought about my mum and the good times.

I’ve only finished the back so far but I’m already calling this ‘grandmummy’s cardigan’ and it will have very special memories for me. Each little knit and purl stitch on this cardigan took my mind somewhere else. I actually plan to do a spot of knitting in the next week or two and with the weather getting cooler and school holidays coming up, well I might just get my wish.  I think it’s knitting season here at retro mummy.

  1. I’m very sorry to hear about your mum, such a sad time. We set up a knitting machine in my Gran’s room when she didn’t have long left. It was like a little factory. She loved the sound of it, being able to instruct(till the very end) and seeing the finished clothes for my wee girl. They’re very, very precious clothes indeed. It also meant she could have company without having to have conversation, or being watched. I think every hospice should provide craft supplies! Be sure to show us the finished result :)

  2. This is beautiful Corrie. This will hold many memories for you. I wish I could knit, sew – I can do that, but I think the knitting talent has escaped me.

  3. That is beautiful. Thoughts still with you. xx

  4. Es una buena terapia de amor.besos desde Valencia España

  5. It’s looking gorgeous. Knitting is therapeutic and good to know you enjoy it and find it special. A great way to start the healing in tough times. God Bless.

  6. Seems your Knitting has been Good for your Soul Dear Corrie…
    Pretty Cardy..Nice Pattern.

  7. First i thought – what are these words about getting colder, then i realized that we in fact are in different hemispheres, and, yes, while nature here is getting awake from its winter dreams, it is autumn in Australia. But despite these ‘minor’ differences i, like so many other people all over the world, am sorry for your loss and sending you my hugs. Knitting is really a great meditative practice. And it sure keeps the warmth of your hands.

  8. I agree that any craft can be very healing and can bring heaps of comfort…

I will be praying for you..

  10. What a great idea. I started crocheting a baby blanket before my firt miscarriage and finished it off after or my souls sake I also started a cross stitch on my Mum’s last day. It took me years to pick it up to finish but it was good to do so. My thoughts are with yo. Cherrie

  11. Right, you’ve convinced me – I’m going to give knitting a go. I’m so glad it was such a reprieve for you.

  12. That is a great pattern. Nice work too.

  13. I can totally relate Corrie. This is beautiful. I always love knitting and receiving knitted gifts. Not a strand of yarn hasn’t been touched by the knitter. I knit when I am stressed, it is very calming. Your mother’s passing is very sad and I send my condolences to you and your family. Much love and God Bless, Fiona

  14. Knitting is a comforting and rhythmic sort of thing … hope it is helping.

  15. What a sweet little cardigan it will be Corrie, filled with memories. I do hope your dad is coping okay with her passing as I imagine he would be heartbroken without her. I am sure that knitting does help keep your mind occupied in times when you really need to think about other things. I guess knitting will remind you of her too as she was a knitter also wasnt she.

  16. Lovely work Corrie, I too enjoy knitting in the winter time. What a special cardy that will be for your family. Thinking of you….

  17. Creating is wonderful healing therapy

  18. That will always be a “special” cardy for you… great approach for soothing the soul and mind Corrie, thoughts and prayers continuing for you and the family.

  21. I’m very glad you have your crafty clever clogs to wear while you’re going through such a rough time, Corrie. I know they help. x

  22. I must admit that knitting really is my thing too although I would like to have a go at sewing one day on the horizan – I just love knitting and the joy/peace it gives me. x Leah x Take care

  23. Your are so sweet, even through heartbreak. I know this beautiful cardigan will be treasured forever. xx

  24. Yes, knitting is good therapy :)
And the finished garment will be all the more special – a memory piece. I hope you find healing begins as you work through making this lovely piece.
My heart goes out to you honey. I will be praying for you as you go through the grieving process.
    God Bless.

  25. ah knitting, I don’t know what it is, I can knit one purl one but knitting anything else I’m hopeless. Crochet is my thing and I agree with you Corrie it relaxes me too and makes you feel so much better.
What a special little jumper. You have done a fantastic job so far. Is it for the beautiful Miss Elodie

  26. So glad to see you knitting again – it has been a while – the cardi looks cute – the waffle pattern looks similar to a vintage pattern that I have and knitted for Amelia two years ago:)

  27. Knitting is such a marvellous talent. This cardigan looks gorgeous, such an elegant colour. I need to learn to knit asap :o)

  28. Special thoughts for you at this sad time, Corrie, and in the weeks ahead … I lost my Dad four years ago and still miss his voice so much, I know your Mum would be so proud of you.

As for knitting I think it’s truly magical at times like this and for all the other times too – happy knitting
