my gingerbread house

time to show off my latest creation……………………so much better than last years effort and honestly if you can buy a kit go for it! Don’t think I’ll be baking my own pieces ever again. The thing is that last year, I decided I HAD to do a house less than a week out from Christmas. Learnt my lesson.  Get in now, you can find Australian stockists for the kits we used here,
ready for gingerbread

So my church were  doing a fundraiser and I could only go to the night time session which meant Liss came instead of Keira (and boy did I pay for it when I got home and keira saw my house – the niagara falls of tears).  So we found a table, introduced ourselves to the fellow gingerbread makers and got started….

the walls are up
Decorating is the fun part and there was lots of variety in the lollies but cheeky kids were coming and trying to clear out our lolly bowls as they’d emptied their own bowls…….. before we had even started decorating! I know, so cheeky! So Liss became the self appointed lolly guard telling kids ‘yes, but only a few’ or ‘no’…..don’t mess with her, I tell you!

the finished house!

I love to cover my house in lollies while liss was channeling her inner martha stewart/donna hay and produced a very chic house. Everyone was in love with her roof!

frills in the hills house
Now for a few tips if you’re making your first house – I’m no expert though -ice the bottom of your house as you put it on the board, I noticed the chef on BH&G last night on TV didn’t  do that which seemed a bit silly. My favourite lollies to use were freckles on the roof, smarties, marshmallow trees, red jelly rings, jubes, raspberries, dolly mix, jelly beans, mini candy canes……..you get the picture, just go crazy. And best of all you can eat what you don’t use.

all wrapped up

And I’ve got to say wrapping up the house takes it to a whole new level –  I’d almost want to give it away……..well almost! I wondered how long it would last with the kids around but trust me, I’m the one walking past it just wanting to tuck in! So I hope all you budding gingerbread house makers will share your creations with me so we can all ohh and ahh together…………

  1. Your gingerbread house looks amazing Corrie! We are going to a workshop next Saturday – can’t wait. Thanks for the tips on good lollies to use. Using freckles on the roof was most inspired.

  2. Your gingerbread house looks too nice to eat! Mmmm, those lollies have made me hungry!!!!

  3. Oh yes, my girls would die if i made one without them!! They are so fantastic, i love your version!!
If you can’t make them, we have a gorgeous Hungarian lady (with 3 boys) who makes them in Canberra, they are perfection, with that genuine European touch. I’ve bought my 2nd one at Shop Handmade already, they take my 4 a week to eat them!! Love Posie

  4. I’m thinking about taking red and yellow food colouring to my gingerbread night and turning the house with the snow on it into a house with red dust .. lol

  5. Love it! They both look fantastic. Will have to start mine although I do have a weakness for jelly sweets so not sure how many will actually make it on to the house! How long do they keep fresh for? Are you keeping yours for Christmas Day?

  6. I spent a fortune one year on a beautifully decorated gingerbread house from Fleischers in Glenferrie Rd. The ants nearly got to it first but when we finally ate it the kids piped up and said “It tastes too much like gingerbread.” Ah, hello? GINGERBREAD house kids. Finally whizzed it up to use as a biscuit base for a cheesecake … a very expensive cheesecake. Yours looks great!

  7. Looks yum! I was tempted to grab a kit yesterday at Costco. Maybe I should get one. Happy weekend!

  8. Darling and what fun too!

  9. Faaaabulous! Clever you, Corrie. It’s beginning to look a lot like Chriiiistmas… x

  15. SO cute Corrie! I love the freckles on the roof — I’ll have to see if I can find those here for when we have our family decorating party!

  16. Wow
    Just. WOW

  17. It looks great Corrie – will you make another with Miss K? I am thinking of grabbing a kit this year and making one for the Kinder raffle, which means that I will have to make two – thanks for the link – might have to go for a drive over and grab one and will keep it in the memory bank as a fundraiser for church or kinder next year.
