gingerbread house school

We are very excited here at the retro household as I saw that they were running gingerbread house making sessions at my church again this year. So keira gets a day off preschool and we’ll each do our own house.  I am seriously more excited than keira!

my first gingerbread house

And  making the house from scratch like I did last year is not going to be an option with a new bub strapped to me. Plus I had serious house envy last year with my friend francine, wowee, I’m talking about little figurines inside her house windows peering out and a very beautiful house.  And I might need to talk to my mum nicely if I want this crocheted house! This was from last year’s Crochet Today mag…..weight watchers friendly!
But I think I’d also like to try the house from the latest Super Food Ideas…………..its a gingerbread cake and looks very cute with step by step instructions and pictures. And if you need some gingerbread inspiration check out flickr or this website. Check out this lady’s work………w-o-w! Anyway share links to your favourite gingerbread houses or your work in your comments. I’d love to see them as I’m looking for some inspiration before next thursday!!!

  1. thats a very cute gingerbread house and that crochet one is awesome!

  2. I thikn you did a great job with last years – saying she who has never made one and it will not be appening again this year – I dont think I can nurse it in the car all the way to Mackay.

Off to check out those links – but I really like this one – simple and sweet.

  3. I’m off to do one of these at Christ Church Anglican Mortdale on the 1st of December with my daughter. They have about three sessions planned this year.

  4. I LOVE gingerbread houses at Christmas too.

We’ve got a girl in the office who makes lovely gingerbread houses for sale. I always buy mine undecorated and do a special night with my kids and my niece where we decorate it. They really love it, and my niece has already asked me about when we’re doing it again this year.

But last year I left it plain, but bought a gingerbread train and cottage kit in Aldi (!) and we really went to town on that instead.

I long for the skills to be able to decorate one with beatiful filagree windows and stained glass effects, but whenever I try to do this I always end up with running mess. I wish our Christmas was in winter, the humidity really wreaks havoc with the structure of them.

Gee, you’ve really touched a nerve there. I’m serious about my Christmas gingerbread houses. That crocheted one is great, I bought that magazine for that pattern alone.

Post a picture when you do yours, I’ll do the same!

  5. I would LOVE to make one….. but I do love the crochet house better…. being on another diet…. fat free.

  6. Thanks for the gingerbread house links. We definately are doing this, this year. I need all the inspiration I can get:)

  7. I love your crocheted gingerbread house. I remember making one at school and we all thought it was too nice to eat. When we did eventually break it up, all the ginger flavour had gone into the lollies and it didn’t taste nice at all. We ended up throwing it out!

  8. I remember yous posting about that crochet house last year. Gorgeous!
We love doing the gingerbread house here too but have ended up just with the IKEA kit a couple of times because the wheels have fallen off our other ideas :-) At least it’s a good backup. What a great idea for the church to run that session! Might have to mention that at our church too.
We decorate the house as one of our advent calendar activities each year. Can’t wait to get all that stuff set up again!!

  11. Oh that gingerbread house is adorable. some peoples just have that nack to invent something new. Tammy

  12. That little crochet house is darling. And the links you gave to “this lady” are super cute. She uses my favorite roof — the necco candies. We love to do gingerbread houses here!

  13. My daughter is the one in this household who makes gingerbread houses. One year she made individual tiny houses for everybody – just 15 cms high! Two years ago she made an absolutely beautifully decorated house with a verandah. It was tied up in cellophane, but a fly got in one night! We looked at it for a time but couldn’t eat it so the two dogs had a feast out in the back yard one day. They loved it, especially the M&M’s!

  14. Um, never made one in my life. I was so in awe when I saw a demo of this gingerbread house making at the WhittleSea show a few weeks back. Looks awesome.

  15. we make houses every year and we love it. we use milk cartons covered with graham crackers and frosting–tons of candy, of course!

  16. I have never had one (and I love gingerbread), have always admired them, wanted to make them – but no don’t think its going to happen
Bought the mag just for the house last year and no I have not made it – maybe I need “littlies” to inspire me :-)

  17. We love gingerbread houses, this year will be our 4th year of making one. I am planning to make some changes this year starting with making it smaller as it never all gets eaten. Might also try stained glass windows!! Hope you enjoy yourself and remember it all for fun!! Here is links to my blog with pics. http://helensscrapstudio.blogspot.com/2010/01/im-back.html
