christmas cooking plans

I’m a creature of habit when it comes to the yummy things that come out of my kitchen in the lead up to Christmas. Every year I do rocky road (white and dark chocolate), rum balls, christmas cake baked early (so not happening early this year), chocolates and on christmas eve I always do shortbread, cookies and fruit mince pies. Phew!

I take this very seriously and have been doing it since my early 20’s. Sometimes I try a new recipe like a different shortbread recipe but I do like my old favourites. And let me tell you ladies this is one way to keep your man happy. Yes sir, retro daddy is chief taste tester and I often have to buy more supplies because a batch of rocky road earmarked for a special person gets eaten by ‘someone’.

So starting tomorrow I’ll be sharing with you my recipes and hopefully trying out a few new ones – and I’ll also be preparing myself for the fact that I have a few more taste testers this year who like the sweet stuff. And so tell me, what is coming out of your kitchen this Christmas?

  4. Hi, first time here, and now following you!, since I am just across the ditch (I am Italian but I live in New Zealand).

Congratulation for the lovely blog, lots of nice ideas here, and great photos. Your baby is gorgeous!

I better start thinking of Xmas too!

    ciao

  5. I was trying to come up with a good blog post – thanks for the idea. I’ll be posting mine on my blog.
    And rocky road – yum!

  6. My mouth is already watering!! YUMMY!!

  7. Not a lot coming out of our kitchen this year as we are travelling home to New Zealand…..but I have ordered from my mum Christmas Cake and she always does shortbread and truffles….looking forward to your recipes and I might just squeeze them in before leaving!

  8. Ooohh! Can’t wait to see your recipes! The rocky road looks yum. I usually do that for easter though.
This year I’m planning on doing biscotti for the adults.
And for my nephews – going to try my hand at making giant freckles and gingerbread men and other edible treats for them because they have everything and they’re going to Tassie after Christmas so it’ll be their snack bag.

BUT I’m looking for a good gingerbread recipe… do you have a tried & tested successful one?

  9. every year I make biscotti to give to friends, christmas cookies, fudge, christmas mince pies, cranberry mince pies… although now I have coeliacs so Im learning to adapt everything.. thank goodness fudge is gluten free!!!

  10. Sounds very yummy, looking forward to trying a recipe or five!! A good shortbread recipe would really hit the spot for me!

  11. Yuuum! It all sounds so good. I love rocky road, too. It doesn’t last long around here either.

I usually make a Christmas cake, ice cream and pav (to use up the whites). So far…nothing…I’ll need to get cracking soon

  12. Corrie, your Christmas baking ideas all sound so yummy – do you package them like your photo?? How do others wrap all the foodie gifts they make for Christmas?

  13. my Christmas baking list:
    -Gingerbread men
    -Fruit mince tarts
    -Shortbread (of various flavours)
    -Christmas Cake

and this year I’m going to try this peppermint bark malarky that is big in the US.

And I thought I might go retro and make some White Christmas!

  14. Looking forward to your recipes!

    Every year I make:

    Xmas cakes
    Truffles
    Rosemary Shortbread
    Peppermint Creams

Mr Plum enjoys being a chief taster too!

  15. That looks yummy mummy! (Sorry!) I look forward to seeing your recipes. I always do cookies and caramel and fudge — yumyum!!!

  16. That candy looks amazing! I’m like you, I have my standbys that I have to make every year — in my case, eggnog cookies, gingerbread cookies and pecan pralines. My husband doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth, but I can always count on my two little munchkins to help me with taste-testing. :)

  17. Looks sooo yummy!! An I love the bag.. how come you have a bag with swedish text on it???? :o))) Havent seen it around here.. In Sweden..lol…

  18. I always make Nigella’s gingerbread muffins – so nice by themselves or with a little dollop of cream. We also try to make gingerbread biscuits to give away, melting moments (for something different) made from Grandma’s recipe, and a couple of trays of Nigella’s brownies. I love to bake but don’t get time to do it so much these days. Looking forward to your shortbread recipe.
