today was a new day

I woke up this morning and said a little prayer that today was a new day and I’m going to start it happy and not let the little things get to me! Oh if only I knew how I needed that prayer to get through the day and the challenges that lay ahead. No hot water for either retro daddy or myself! Not the best way to start your day…so retro daddy asked our new homestay student (a 16 year old boy – say no more?) Did you have a shower today? was it hot?. Oh yes he said I had a lovely hot shower at 6.30am….which I guess is code for ‘long use up all the hot water’ shower.
But I wasn’t going to let it get to me, I was going to keep smiling eventhough my hair needed a wash and I didn’t feel awake yet. So I switch on the computer to check emails….oh so slow. No photos coming up on my blog. This is odd. Haven’t had this happen before. I had to duck out for a little playdate. Note to self that taking a tray of cinnamon rolls to your friend’s oven will just cement your friendship and make sure you’re remembered by her husband.  Mike, I hope you enjoyed them!

on the mend

So I get home, feed everyone and ring telstra who tell me that my ‘unlimited’ plan (I think they use the word ‘unlimited’ loosely) has been exceeded in one week. The guy was like ‘wow, its just shot up to 4000 MB a day and thats pretty huge’. That meant nothing to me but I knew the culprit. So despite changing plans immediately and banning the culprit from the internet I’m still running slow, oh so slow, and can’t download for another week. Blogs are no fun to read without pictures……trust me!
Cut a long story short I’ll be sharing photos already on my computer for the next 7 days. I’ll also try to be nice to my student who has obviously been downloading and skyping to his heart’s content in his room each night instead of reading the house rules!! But we’re still smiling and tomorrow is another new day……… and of course when your children are this cute tomorrow is always a new day to enjoy with them.

  1. Oh dear. Hope your day picks up, and you get some limits in place with your visitor.

  2. Grrr how frustrating! Love your attitude though. No doubt if it were me, I would’ve cracked the shits big time. xx

  3. Oh, I’ve been having one of those days too! But you’re right, I shouldn’t let it get to me, besides one toddler disappears back to him mum in three hours… just count down the minutes….

  5. so sorry to hear you are having a bad day. Can you talk to the student and set ome ground rules? My sister in law has students stay with her all the time and she sets up house rules with them, eg- 4 minute shower (which the rest of the household also obeys), limited use of internet for contacting family only and only short amount of time, friends can come stay but she needs to have met them atleast twice before hand etc…

Helps things run smoothly as like you, the first time she had a student stay things were hey wire.

    Hope your day improves xox

  6. Thanks Rose! This is our 3rd year of hosting students – we have the rules all printed out and in their room when they arrive but this guy is challenging almost all of them!

  7. No hot water on a winter’s morning is no fun at all – i actually thought you were going to say that the pipes had frozen, not that someone had already used it all up! I was an exchange student once upon a time, (well before the days of internet though), and lately I have been wondering if we might host one one day – you’re turning me off the idea. 😉

  8. Have you got enough on your plate?
    No?
Let’s add a sixteen year old student into the mix!
    Perfect!!!

(You are a complete nutter but that’s why we love you!)

    Andi :-)

  9. 期待期待,期待您的更新啊!............................................................

  10. Would another cinnamon roll improve your day?!

  11. Oh my goodness, my 16 yr old did that when we first got the internet so I had to get unlimited usage too. I do hope he knows the rules now and it doesnt make you have anymore bad days! Maybe he needs a shower timer too. Keira looks very cute in the photo too and I bet those cinnamon scrolls are disappearing just as fast as you make them.

  12. Hey at least you’ve got a great excuse to make yourself a hat Cor!
    Wishing you many happy days.
    Ab x
Ps. Chins up, don’t let the few bad make you forget all the good ones x

  13. Just remember Julie Andrew’s singing ” getting to know you, getting to know all about you”

  14. Hope the week is better as he hopefully learns the rules

  15. Dear me Corrie, I love how positive you are. Perhaps your 16yr old has a playstation in the room also…trust me, they chew the internet faster than any computer!! Good luck!

  16. Uh-Oh. Sounds like a little training is in order. I’m going to share your experience with my sister — she’s getting a new student next month. We’ll see how he adjusts to sharing the bathroom with 4 other people.

Stay cheery — you’re such a doll. And so right — with such cute little angels, all the other stuff is minor!

  17. Oh dear, I think all teenagers do those things whether they are yours or not, I know lots of people that end up with passwords on their Internet and codes on the telephones, not nice. Oh, oh, I made those scrolls this afternoon, I couldn’t use as much butter as the recipe called for cause it would have just run all over the place, but they were divine. I will use less icing next time too, im not really a sweet tooth, do love a good cinnamon scroll though. Mmmmm, think I need a cup of tea and another scroll as a bedtime snack :-)

  18. Just think Corrie, in 10 years we’ll both be experiencing this fourfold. At least you’ll be the wiser for experiencing it first hand from a guest teenager. No cinnamon scrolls for him.

  19. By the way, is that your teenage guest leaving you expletives in Japanese in the comments? Does he read your blog?

  20. Ok – that is it – those cinnamon scrolls are going on the list.

Corrie – you deserve to me knighted:) But why o earth is a 16 year old out of bed at that hour? Dont they all sleep in? Good luck with him and keep smiling.

  21. She is VERY cute, and you just don’t know what is going to happen next. Stay calm.

  22. Wow, I’m impressed you managed to stay positive! You need to switch to a better ISP – we used to be with telstra, we’ve since switched to internode who give us a better product for less than we paid telstra, and if we ever exceed our monthly download limit (rare) we can buy additional datablocks for the month cheaply.

  23. OMG.. I cant believe you have (nearly) 4 kids AND a homestay student! Obiviously it comes down to your positive attitude. We have a homestay uni student staying with us for the year too. Not sure if I would have been as calm as you in this situation!
