Japanese Cooking 101

I can now cook japanese! On saturday we made vegetable tempura, agedashi tofu (my favourite), pork tonkatsu, cucumber salad, miso soup and sauces to accompany each dish. Our lovely teacher Keiko was my pattern making teacher and gave us plenty of tips and other recipes. She classifies her cooking style as japanese home cooking which is just what I needed to learn. Sydney ladies I did my course here!

Here is the agedashi tofu that my kitchen made. I was most suprised by how easy every dish was, the ingredients are so simple and once you have your basic supplies (cooking sake, dashi powder, soy sauce, rice) you just need to add a few things and you’re off. Yesterday I wasted no time in heading to Tokyo Mart (sydney ladies this place is a fabulous mini supermarket in Northbridge) and bought all my supplies. I then popped next door for a rice cooker and last night made chicken and egg donburi (do you think I remembered to take a photo). Retro Daddy is thrilled with the new recipes and we’re having japanese all week!

I also whipped up a quick skirt and top for keira yesterday which she loves! Nothing like a 1 hour project on a Sunday afternoon while babies nap…fabric from Spotlight last summer and a target long sleeved white tee….too easy!

Comments

  1. Great skirt, Gymboree had a line from that fabric last year it is too sweet. That’s the course I was hoping to do! Also a fan of Tokyomart at Northbridge, they have the Japanese “happy eggs” there. Now when we shop there my daughter sings the “happy if you know it” song when she sees the eggs.

  2. Corrie! how inspiring! I cant believe you can just “whip” us these creations! both the food and the clothes! amazing!

  3. Oh I forgot to ask, is she the same teacher who takes the sewing classes at Mosman? Very clever teacher!

  4. Yumm – wish I lived closer or I would be signing up for a class too – Your kitchen will have some lovely food coming out of it this week by the sounds.

Love the little skirt and top – I have some of that fabric too – it is earmarked for a summer dress for Amelia.

  5. Yum! Yum! Looks and sounds so good!!

  6. Yum! Did you whip up the top too? That would take me all night!

  7. the Japanese cooking class sounds really wonderful…and the little outfit that you made for your daughter is ADORABLE!!! I too am a fan of one hour napping baby projects! good job!

  8. I adore agedashi tofu. The course sounds divine! We’ve been enjoying making things from the Kylie Kwong book and you’re right, once the pantry is stocked with a couple of core ingredients it’s not hard to make something that tastes delish.

  9. Oh how cute does Keira look in that outfit. Japanese cooking sounds very nice and it looks great too. I bet you enjoyed every minute of learning those new recipes.

  10. Your cooking looks delicious as does the little skirt…what a productive weekend you have had!

  11. sounds like the course was a win win then.

  12. Great taste! I have that same cute fabric.

  13. I love Tokyo Mart. And I love making don buri. Is your chicken donburi a closely guarded secret or do you think I can try it out? I made my recipe up!

PS We use our rice cooker at least twice a week – we love it.
